“Drilling mud zero discharge” refers to the traditional drilling waste treatment method. In the previous traditional drilling process, the drilling waste was disposed of by establishing a mud pit at the drilling site, that is, the drilling waste was discharged. To the mud pit on the ground for the next step of processing, or even directly buried. However, this traditional discharge method has caused serious pollution and great harm to the environment and human life.

Therefore, the State Environmental Protection Administration of China formally legislated in January 2015 to put forward stricter processing requirements and standards for drilling waste. The concept of “drilling mud zero discharge” also came into being.
